The given tally chart shows items sold at a school store. How many items were sold altogether?

Each of the individual tally marks represents one item. Four tally marks with a line through them represents five items. This means that the tallies in the eraser column represent five items and four items. This means there were a total of nine erasers sold.

In the same way, we can see that there were three highlighters sold. There were five pencils sold. And finally, there were two pairs of scissors sold. We can therefore calculate the total number of items sold by adding nine, three, five, and two. This is equal to 19.

So there were 19 items sold altogether in the school store.
