How many tenths are there in a fifth?

Here is a representation of a fifth, one out of five. If we want to know how many tenths are in our fifth, we would take the whole thing and divide it into 10 equal parts. Here is that same whole piece divided into tens. How many tenths are there in the blue highlighted fifth? Two tenths are part of one-fifth. So we say that there are two tenths in a fifth.

Another really cool thing about this is that it’s a picture representation. I’m taking one-fifth and dividing it by one tenth. We know that when we try to divide fractions, we change the sign and flip the second value. The first value stays the same.

One-fifth divided by one tenth becomes one-fifth times 10 over one. One times 10 equals 10. Five times one equals five. 10 over five reduces to two because there are two tenths in a fifth.
