Write the answer to the calculation in grams. 46 kilograms plus 72 grams.

Here we’ve got two two-digit numbers, 46 and 72. So, shall we just add these two numbers together to find the answer? No, we need to look more closely at the question. The two measurements are measurements of mass, but they’re both given in different units of measurement. 46 kilograms plus 72 grams. And, we’re told to write the answers to the calculation in grams. So, we can’t just add 46 and 72 together. That would be a mistake. Instead, we need to convert one of the measurements, so that they’re both in the same unit of measurement. Cause we’re asked for the answer to the calculation in grams, then let’s convert both measurements into grams.

We can see that the second measurement is already in grams, so we don’t need to worry about that one. But, 46 is in measurement of kilograms. So, we need to convert this into grams before we add the two together. What do we know about kilograms and grams? Well, one kilogram is worth 1000 grams. And so, to convert kilograms into grams, we multiply by 1000. This is quite straightforward to do when we’re multiplying a number like 46 because if we multiply 46 by 1000, we get that number of thousands. 46 times 1000 equals 46000. So, we can say 46 kilograms is the same as 46000 grams.

Now, both our measurements are in grams. We can add them together. And, the answer will also be in grams. 46000 plus 72. Well, we can see there are two zeros in the tens and the units places of 46000. So, if we add 72 to 46000, the seven and the two digits will just fit into the number. 46000 plus 72 equals 46072.

We realized that in order to add these two measurements together, they had to both be in the same unit of measurement. And, because the question asked us to give our answer in grams, we knew we had to convert 46 kilograms into grams. We couldn’t just add 46 and 72 together. 46 kilograms we found was 46000 grams. 46000 plus 72 equals 46072. And so, 46 kilograms plus 72 grams equals 46072 grams.
