Complete the table. Round 39476 to the nearest 10000, to the nearest 1000, to the nearest 100.

First, we need to round to the nearest 10000. 39476 is between 30000 and 40000. Which of these numbers is nearest? If we place 39476 on the number line, we can see that its nearest to 40000. The thousands digit is a nine. We also know that if this digit is five or more, we should round up. And if it was less than five, we should round down. 39476 rounded to the nearest 10000 is 40000.

Next, we need to round to the nearest 1000. When we’re rounding to the nearest 1000, we look at the hundreds digit. It’s a four. It’s less than five, so we round down. 39476 to the nearest 1000 is 39000.

Next, we need to round to the nearest 100. To do this, we look at the tens digit. This digit is a seven. Seven is more than five, so we round up to 39500.
