Eight times five equals what?

One way we can think of this symbol is as the word “lots of.” In other words, what are eight lots of five? Or what are eight groups of five? This is what eight groups of five might look like. How can we find out how many we have in total? We can count in fives eight times. Five, two fives are 10, 15, four times five is 20; we’re halfway there, 25, six fives are 30, seven fives are 35, and eight groups of five are 40.

We counted in five eight times: five, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40. Eight multiplied by five equals 40.
