Video Transcript

Rewrite the expression 𝑥 plus seven plus two using the associative property.

This property states that when three or more numbers are added, the sum is the same regardless of the grouping. In our expression, we are adding 𝑥 and seven first and then adding two to this sum. This is the same as adding the seven and two first and then adding 𝑥 to the answer. The associative property of addition tells us that 𝑥 plus seven plus two is equal to 𝑥 plus seven plus two. Both of these expressions would simplify to 𝑥 plus nine.
