Lesson Plan: Integration by Partial Fractions of Improper Fractions

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to use partial fractions to find the integrals of rational functions where the degree of the numerator is higher than the degree of the denominator.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • use partial fractions to find definite and indefinite integrals of rational functions where the degree of the numerator is greater than or equal to the degree of the denominator.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • basic integration,
  • the method of partial fractions for rational expressions where the degree of the numerator is less than the degree of the denominator.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • integration by parts,
  • definite integration.
