Lesson Plan: The Human Breathing System
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to identify and describe the function of the organs of the human respiratory system and outline the process of gas exchange and the adaptations of the alveoli.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- identify the parts and organs of the human breathing (respiratory) system as the mouth and nose, the trachea, the bronchi, the bronchioles, and the alveoli,
- describe the functions of the major organs of the human respiratory system,
- state that breathing takes in oxygen for cellular respiration and gives out carbon dioxide and water vapor,
- describe the pathway taken by oxygen from the air and into the lungs,
- recall that the alveoli of the lungs are the site of gas exchange,
- describe the adaptations of alveoli in the lungs to maximize gas exchange,
- state that the oxygen breathed into the lungs is transported around the body by hemoglobin in the blood.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- levels of organization (cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems).
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- the mechanism of ventilation,
- the detailed role of the diaphragm and intercostal muscles.
