This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to add and subtract proper fractions with like and unlike denominators.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • add proper fractions with like denominators and simplify the result where necessary,
  • subtract proper fractions with like denominators and simplify the result where necessary,
  • add proper fractions with unlike denominators and simplify the result where necessary,
  • subtract proper fractions with unlike denominators and simplify the result where necessary,
  • solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • representing fractions using models,
  • simplifying fractions,
  • finding equivalent fractions,
  • finding a common multiple of two numbers.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • addition of more than two proper fractions or calculations involving a combination of addition and subtraction,
