Lesson Plan: Bar Models: Numbers up to 10,000 Mathematics

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to solve one-step addition and subtraction problems by modeling them with either part–whole or comparative bar models and writing equations.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • draw part–whole bar models to solve addition and subtraction problems,
  • draw comparative bar models to solve additive comparison problems,
  • identify the correct operation to use to solve a problem,
  • write stories to match a given bar model.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • adding and subtracting numbers up to 10,000.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • solving two-step word problems with bar models.
