Lesson Plan: Bar Models: Numbers up to 10,000 Mathematics
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to solve one-step addition and subtraction problems by modeling them with either part–whole or comparative bar models and writing equations.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- draw part–whole bar models to solve addition and subtraction problems,
- draw comparative bar models to solve additive comparison problems,
- identify the correct operation to use to solve a problem,
- write stories to match a given bar model.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- adding and subtracting numbers up to 10,000.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- solving two-step word problems with bar models.
