Lesson Plan: The Ideal Gas Law in terms of Number of Moles Physics

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to calculate the relationship between the number of moles in an ideal gas and the values of its bulk properties.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • relate the bulk properties of an ideal gas to the number of moles of the gas using the formula 𝑃𝑉=𝑛𝑅𝑇,
  • recall that 𝑅 is approximately 8.31 J/Kβ‹…mol.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • the ideal gas law in the form 𝑃𝑉=π‘˜π‘‡,
  • the ideal gas law in the form 𝑃𝑉𝑇=π‘ƒπ‘‰π‘‡οŠ§οŠ§οŠ§οŠ¨οŠ¨οŠ¨,
  • moles as a unit.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • the Boltzmann constant,
  • Avogadro’s number,
  • the kinetic energies of gas particles.
