Lesson Plan: One-Step Input–Output Patterns Mathematics • 4th Grade

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to look for patterns in input–output tables using one-step rules and use this to find missing numbers.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • identify the input, function rule, and output in a simple function table,
  • find the output when given the input and function rule,
  • find the rule when given a function table,
  • find missing numbers in an input–output table.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • adding and subtracting within 100,
  • division and multiplication facts to 10×10.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • input–output tables with more than one step.
