Lesson Plan: Classifying Discontinuities Mathematics • Higher Education
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to differentiate between the three types of function discontinuity at a given point.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- know what it means for a function to have a discontinuity at a point,
- classify function discontinuities as removable, essential, or jump discontinuities,
- recognize infinite discontinuities by looking for vertical asymptotes.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- identifying continuity at a point,
- one sided limits,
- piecewise continuous functions,
- limits of functions,
- asymptotes of curves.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- the continuity of functions.
