Lesson Plan: Classifying Discontinuities Mathematics

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to differentiate between the three types of function discontinuity at a given point.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • know what it means for a function to have a discontinuity at a point,
  • classify function discontinuities as removable, essential, or jump discontinuities,
  • recognize infinite discontinuities by looking for vertical asymptotes.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • identifying continuity at a point,
  • one sided limits,
  • piecewise continuous functions,
  • limits of functions,
  • asymptotes of curves.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • the continuity of functions.
