Lesson Plan: Capacitor Dielectrics

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to describe the effect of the size of a capacitor’s plates on the capacitor by how much they are separated and by what medium separates them.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • relate the capacitance, 𝐶, of a capacitor to the area, 𝐴, of its plates, the distance, 𝑑, between the plates, and the permittivity, 𝜖, of the dielectric material between the plates, using the equation 𝐶=𝜖𝐴𝑑,
  • describe qualitatively how the permittivity of the dielectric material between the plates of a capacitor affects the electric field between the plates.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • 𝐶=𝑄𝑉,
  • 𝑉=𝐸𝑑,
  • the value of the permittivity of a vacuum.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • energy stored in capacitors.
