Lesson Plan: Making Teen Numbers with Tens and Ones Mathematics • 1st Grade

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to model the numbers 11–19 and decompose them into a ten and ones.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • count objects and group them into a group of one ten and remaining ones,
  • recognize that a group of ten ones is equal to one ten,
  • decompose two-digit numbers up to 20 into a ten and ones,
  • state the value of each digit in the numbers 11–20.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • making the numbers 11–19 by making a group of 10 ones and some more ones.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • one more of or less than numbers up to 20.
