Lesson Plan: A Compass

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to identify the compass and describe how it works.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • identify a compass,
  • describe what a compass is used for,
  • name the four cardinal directions,
  • identify that the needle of a compass is a magnet that points north,
  • compare and contrast a compass to a compass rose.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • maps and the compass rose,
  • cardinal directions in relation to maps and the compass rose,
  • magnets,
  • direction.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • the use of a compass with maps,
  • using a magnetic compass for finding directions,
  • the specifics of how the magnet in a magnetic compass works in relation to Earth’s magnetic field.
