Lesson Plan: Asteroids and Comets Science • First Year of Preparatory School
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to define asteroids, comets, meteors, and meteorites, what they are made of, and where they can be found.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- recall what asteroids are,
- recall that there is an asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter,
- recall what meteors and meteorites are,
- recall what comets are made of,
- recall how comets orbit the Sun.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- the names of the eight planets of the solar system and their order from the Sun,
- the idea that the planets orbit the Sun,
- the idea that planets have almost circular orbits.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- the Trojan asteroids,
- the Kuiper Belt,
- the Oort cloud,
- Ceres and other dwarf planets,
- where comets come from,
- how asteroids form,
- hyperbolic orbits,
- orbital resonances,
- Jupiter’s role in forming the asteroid belt.
