Students will be able to

  • recall how comets orbit the Sun.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • the names of the eight planets of the solar system and their order from the Sun,
  • the idea that the planets orbit the Sun,
  • the idea that planets have almost circular orbits.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • the Trojan asteroids,
  • the Kuiper Belt,
  • the Oort cloud,
  • Ceres and other dwarf planets,
  • where comets come from,
  • how asteroids form,
  • hyperbolic orbits,
  • orbital resonances,
  • Jupiter’s role in forming the asteroid belt.
