Lesson Plan: Movement of Substances
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to describe the process of diffusion as a way for substances to cross cell membranes and explain the significance of the diffusion of water (osmosis) in plants.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- state that substances move in and out of cells across the cell membrane by diffusion,
- define diffusion as the movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration,
- state that water diffuses into plant root hair cells by a process called osmosis,
- state that plants wilt when there is not enough diffusion of water to keep their vacuoles full.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- the function of the cell membrane in controlling the entry and exit of materials.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- water potential,
- facilitated diffusion or active transport,
- factors affecting the rate of diffusion.
