This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to relate the potential difference induced across straight conductors to their motion in uniform magnetic fields.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • use the formula 𝜀=𝑙𝐵𝑣(𝜃)sin to calculate induced emf, magnetic field strength, and magnitude and angle of velocity to magnetic field direction,
  • use calculated induced emf to determine current and resistance in a circuit,
  • qualitatively describe induced emf variations in straight conductors undergoing periodic motion within uniform magnetic fields.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • Ohm’s law,
  • induced electric currents in closed loops,
  • 𝐹=𝐵𝐼𝐿=𝐵𝑞𝑣.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • formulas for induced current in closed loops.
