Lesson Plan: Displacement–Time Graphs Mathematics

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to use displacement–time graphs and interpret the slope of the curve as the velocity of the body.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • interpret displacement–time graphs in the context of describing a journey,
  • understand that the slope of a displacement–time graph corresponds to velocity,
  • calculate velocities from a displacement–time graph,
  • find the average speed and average velocity from a displacement–time graph.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • displacement.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • velocity–time graphs.
