Lesson Plan: Picture Graphs with Unit Scales Mathematics • 1st Grade

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to read and draw picture graphs where each picture represents a count of one and solve simple put-together, take-apart, and compare problems.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • understand pictographs by reading the title, key, and labels,
  • count the pictures to find the total for a category,
  • determine which category has the most or fewest items and which category has the same number of items as another category,
  • find the total of two categories,
  • find the difference between categories.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • sorting and classifying objects by attributes,
  • the features of picture graphs.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • using a key where each picture represents a count of more than one.
