Lesson Plan: Picture Graphs with Unit Scales Mathematics • 1st Grade
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to read and draw picture graphs where each picture represents a count of one and solve simple put-together, take-apart, and compare problems.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- understand pictographs by reading the title, key, and labels,
- count the pictures to find the total for a category,
- determine which category has the most or fewest items and which category has the same number of items as another category,
- find the total of two categories,
- find the difference between categories.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- sorting and classifying objects by attributes,
- the features of picture graphs.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- using a key where each picture represents a count of more than one.
