Lesson Plan: Cartesian Products Mathematics

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to perform a Cartesian product and use the operations applied on sets.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • return the elements of the Cartesian product of two sets,
  • apply standard set operations such as union and intersection to Cartesian product questions,
  • understand that Cartesian products are noncommutative and nonassociative,
  • represent Cartesian products using arrow diagrams and Cartesian diagrams.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • standard set operations and notation such as union and intersection,
  • 𝑛(𝑋) as the number of elements in set 𝑋.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • Cartesian products of more than two sets,
  • relations and functions between sets.
