Lesson Plan: Translations on a Coordinate Plane Mathematics • 8th Grade

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to translate points, line segments, and shapes on a coordinate plane.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • understand translation on a coordinate plane as the movement in the direction of the 𝑥-axis and the movement in the direction of the 𝑦-axis,
  • understand the coordinate transformation that represents a translation,
  • translate points, line segments, and shapes on the coordinate plane given the coordinate transformation of the translation.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • points on a coordinate plane,
  • negative numbers.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • converting between coordinate transformations and translations given as magnitudes and directions.
