Lesson Plan: Arc Length by Integration Mathematics • Higher Education

This lesson plan includes the objectives and prerequisites of the lesson teaching students how to use integration to find the length of a curve.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • find the arc length of a curve defined by 𝑦=𝑓(𝑥) using integration,
  • find the arc length of a curve defined by 𝑥=𝑔(𝑦) using integration,
  • define the arc length function 𝑠(𝑥), measuring the arc length from a point a to a point 𝑥.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • differentiation and integration of polynomial and trigonometric functions,
  • integration by substitution.
