Lesson Plan: Design of the Ohmmeter Physics • Third Year of Secondary School

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to describe combining a galvanometer with fixed and variable resistors to design a DC ohmmeter.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • describe the appropriate connection of a galvanometer and fixed and variable resistors to produce an ohmmeter,
  • explain the required resistance ratio of the fixed and variable resistors,
  • explain the nonlinear variation of the arm deflection of an ohmmeter with linear change in measured resistance.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • galvanometers,
  • Ohm’s law,
  • series circuits.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • ammeters,
  • voltmeters,
  • calculations of magnetic fields.
