Lesson Plan: Introduction to Complex Numbers Mathematics

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to deal with imaginary numbers, knowing that complex numbers are made of a real part and an imaginary part.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • recognize that complex numbers are an extension of real numbers and understand that complex numbers arise as solutions to equations of the form 𝑥+𝑎=0,
  • recall the definition of 𝑖, that is, 𝑖=1,
  • evaluate square roots of negative numbers, for example, 64,
  • understand that a complex number is a number that is formed of a complex of two parts: a real part and an imaginary part,
  • identify the real and imaginary parts of a complex number.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • the real numbers,
  • how to evaluate square roots,
  • how to solve and graph quadratic equations.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • operations on complex numbers.
