Lesson Plan: Phase Difference of Traveling Waves

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to relate the phases of waves that have traveled different paths to the waves’ properties and path lengths.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • relate the path differences and phase differences of waves of equal wavelength that travel different paths.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • 𝑣=𝑓𝜆,
  • the fact that a path difference change of one wavelength corresponds to a phase difference change of 2𝜋 rad,
  • sine and cosine functions.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • interference patterns.
