Lesson Plan: Grouping Living Things
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to put living things into groups according to their features.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- define the term organism,
- understand that animals can be divided into vertebrates and invertebrates and know what these terms mean,
- understand that vertebrates can be divided into fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals,
- recall the main features of fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals,
- classify vertebrates as fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals,
- understand that plants can be divided into flowering and nonflowering plants and know what these terms mean,
- recognize examples of flowering and nonflowering plants,
- use a branched key to identify organisms.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- the meanings of the terms vertebrates and invertebrates,
- some common animals that are vertebrates and some that are invertebrates.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- microorganisms.
