Lesson Plan: Unit Fractions Mathematics • 3rd Grade

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to model and write unit fractions, use the terms “numerator” and “denominator” correctly, and recognize that a unit fraction has a numerator equal to 1.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • identify one part of a whole,
  • identify the numerator of a fraction,
  • identify the denominator of a fraction,
  • recognize that a unit fraction has a numerator equal to 1,
  • write unit fractions.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • how to write fractions using words and numbers,
  • the concept of dividing a whole into equal parts.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • fractions greater than 1,
  • operations with fractions,
  • denominators greater than 12,
  • fractions of quantities,
  • fractions on a number line.
