Objectives

Students will be able to

  • define the associative property of multiplication,
  • use the associative property of multiplication to rewrite a given expression,
  • model the associative property using arrays,
  • use the associative property to evaluate a given numerical expression,
  • use the associative property to find a missing factor in a multiplication expression,
  • use the associative property of multiplication to solve word problems.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • multiplication up to 10×10,
  • multiplying using area models and arrays,
  • the commutative property of multiplication,
  • finding products of two single-digit numbers.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • fractions or decimals,
  • factors greater than 10,
  • variables.
