This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to check whether a 2 × 2 matrix has an inverse and then find its inverse, if possible.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • find whether a 2×2 matrix is invertible using determinants,
  • understand the definition of a singular matrix (not invertible),
  • prove that the two matrices are multiplicative inverses of each other,
  • find the inverse of a 2×2 matrix, if possible.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • 2×2 matrices,
  • matrix operations (addition, subtraction, and multiplication),
  • 2×2 matrix determinants,
  • the identity matrix.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • the inverse of a 3×3 (or higher) matrix,
  • using the inverse of a 2×2 matrix to solve systems of two linear equations,
  • explaining the adjoint method to find the inverse of a matrix.
