Lesson Plan: Modeling Two-Step Addition and Subtraction Problems

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to interpret and solve two-step word problems by adding and subtracting numbers up to 1,000.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • draw part–whole and comparison bar models to represent a word problem,
  • identify which operation to use to solve each step of the problem,
  • add and subtract within 1,000 to solve multistep problems.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • writing addition and subtraction equations,
  • adding and subtracting three-digit numbers.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • numbers over 1,000.
