Lesson Plan: Subtracting Decimals with Hundredths: The Column Method

Objectives
Students will be able to
- use place value models to regroup when subtracting two decimals with up to two decimal places,
- make connections between concrete models used to subtract two decimals with up to two decimal places and the written column method,
- subtract two decimals with up to two decimal places without regrouping using the column method,
- subtract two decimals with up to two decimal places with regrouping using the column method,
- solve word problems involving subtracting two decimals with up to two decimal places.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- using the column method to subtract two decimals with one decimal place,
- subtracting decimals using models,
- using place value models to represent decimals,
- the place values of tenths and hundredths.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- subtracting decimals with more than two decimal places,
- subtracting more than two decimals.
