Objectives

Students will be able to

  • identify and describe the effects of friction,
  • explain ways in which friction is useful,
  • explain ways in which friction is not useful.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • the idea that friction is a force that acts between surfaces,
  • the fact that friction produces heat,
  • using force diagrams to represent the directions of forces,
  • push and pull forces,
  • the definition of the term motion,
  • the definition of the term mass,
  • the definition of the term speed.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • comparisons between sliding and rolling friction,
  • air and water resistance.
