Lesson Plan: Attenuation of Electromagnetic Radiation in Solid Materials Physics

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to calculate the proportion of electromagnetic radiation that remains when the radiation passes through a solid barrier.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • understand that radiation attenuates as it passes through a material,
  • use 𝑥=2𝜇ln in all permutations,
  • use 𝜇=𝜇𝜌 in all permutations,
  • use 𝐼𝐼=𝑒 in all permutations,
  • use 𝐼𝐼=𝑒ln in all permutations.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • units of eV.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • types of scattering,
  • diffraction of radiation in different materials.
