Lesson Plan: Estimating Sums of Three-Digit Numbers: Rounding Mathematics • 3rd Grade
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to use different strategies to estimate the sum of two three-digit numbers.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- identify the digit with the highest place value in a three-digit number,
- round three-digit addends to the highest place value,
- estimate the sum of three-digit numbers by rounding to the nearest ten or hundred,
- estimate the sum of three-digit numbers by rounding to the highest place value,
- compare the accuracy of different estimates.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- the place values of three-digit numbers,
- using column addition to find the sum of two-digit or three-digit numbers,
- rounding three-digit numbers to the nearest ten or hundred.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- estimating the sum of four-digit numbers.
