Lesson Plan: Scale Drawings and Models

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to calculate the scale factor and the dimensions of both the scaled model and the actual object and apply this to real-world problems.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • understand the relationship between the drawing scale, the actual length, and the drawing length,
  • calculate the drawing scale, the actual length, and the drawing length,
  • define minimization and enlargement and their relation to the drawing scale,
  • decide whether a drawing scale represents a minimization or an enlargement.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • ratio notation,
  • ratio as fractions,
  • proportion,
  • unit conversion.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • scales other than 1𝑥 and 𝑥1.
