Lesson Plan: History of Astronomy Science

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to describe how our understanding of the solar system has changed over time from a geocentric model to a heliocentric model.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • name the main scientists involved in developing and supporting the geocentric model of the solar system,
  • identify and describe the geocentric model,
  • name the main scientists involved in developing and supporting the heliocentric model of the solar system,
  • identify and describe the heliocentric model,
  • describe how the work of Galileo helped develop our understanding of the solar system.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • the main components of the solar system,
  • the movements of the planets around the Sun.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • details of the planets in the solar system.
