Lesson Plan: Solving Trigonometric Equations Using Trigonometric Identities
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to use Pythagorean trigonometric identities to solve trigonometric equations.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- solve a trigonometric equation over a given interval by applying one or more of the following trigonometric identities:
- reciprocal identities,
- periodic identities,
- Pythagorean identities,
- angle sum and difference identities,
- odd and even identities,
- cofunction identities,
- solve real-world problems involving solving a trigonometric equation over a given interval by applying one or more trigonometric identities.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- the following trigonometric identities:
- reciprocal identities,
- periodic identities,
- Pythagorean identities,
- angle sum and difference identities,
- odd and even identities,
- cofunction identities,
- solving trigonometric equations.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- solving trigonometric equations with half-angle or double-angle identities,
- solving a simple trigonometric or reciprocal trigonometric identity,
- verifying trigonometric identities.
