Objectives
Students will be able to
- find the areas of shapes made of whole and half squares,
- combine half squares to make a whole,
- record the areas of shapes in square units,
- compare and order areas made up of whole and half squares.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- finding areas by counting unit squares,
- the concept of halves,
- comparing and ordering whole numbers.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- approximating the areas of shapes,
- reading or writing decimal, fractional, or mixed numbers,
- identifying polygons,
- multiplying to find areas of shapes.
