Lesson Plan: The Electromagnetic Spectrum Science

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to relate visible light colors to the spectrum of electromagnetic radiation.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • recall that visible light is a form of electromagnetic radiation,
  • recall that the electromagnetic spectrum refers to the set of all frequencies of electromagnetic waves,
  • recall that visible light has a wavelength range of approximately 400 nm to 700 nm,
  • recall that the Sun produces white light,
  • recall that white light contains light of all visible frequencies.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • the meaning of the term wavelength,
  • the meaning of the term frequency.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • dispersion,
  • values of wavelengths for nonvisible electromagnetic radiation,
  • applications of electromagnetic radiation,
  • sources of electromagnetic radiation other than the Sun.
