Lesson Plan: Atoms, Elements, and Compounds Science

This lesson plan includes the objectives and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to describe elements, compounds, and molecules, distinguish between them, and identify chemical elements from their symbols.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • describe what an atom is,
  • describe what an element is,
  • describe what a compound is and how it differs from an element,
  • identify the number of atoms/elements a molecule is composed of,
  • identify molecules as either compounds or elemental molecules,
  • describe the molecule as the simplest building unit of matter that retains the properties of a substance,
  • identify and give examples of the chemical symbols of some well-known elements,
  • distinguish between elements and compounds by their chemical formulas or illustrations.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • the structure of the atom,
  • the types of bonding in compounds and molecules,
  • the periodic table.
