Lesson Plan: Hours and Minutes Mathematics
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to identify the number of minutes in an hour and convert between hours and minutes in simple cases.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- use clocks to investigate how many minutes are in an hour,
- recall how many minutes are in a half hour, quarter of an hour, or third of an hour,
- convert from hours and minutes to minutes,
- convert from minutes to hours and minutes by partitioning,
- compare durations in minutes with durations in hours and minutes.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- identifying halves, quarters, and thirds,
- counting in fives.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- durations longer than three hours.
