Lesson Plan: Types of Variables Mathematics
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to distinguish between categorical and quantitative variables.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- distinguish between quantitative (or numerical) and qualitative (or categorical) variables,
- determine whether a given quantitative variable is discrete or continuous,
- identify upper- and lower-class boundaries, the class midpoint, and the class width when given a grouped frequency table.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- samples and population,
- sampling methods.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- computing or estimating statistics such as the mean, the median, and the standard deviation,
- interpreting data presented in a grouped frequency table.
