Lesson Plan: Substitution to Manipulate Equations into Quadratics Mathematics

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to solve complicated equations by making substitutions that reduce the equation to a quadratic.


Students will be able to

  • solve equations of the form 𝑓(𝑥)+𝑎𝑓(𝑥)+𝑏=0,
  • solve equations of the form 𝑓(𝑥)𝑏𝑓(𝑥)=𝑐,
  • solve equations of the form 𝑥𝑓(𝑥)+𝑎𝑥𝑓(𝑥)+𝑏𝑥=0.


Students should already be familiar with

  • solving quadratic equations,
  • factoring algebraic expressions.


Students will not cover

  • solving more complicated equations that do not contain a hidden quadratic.
