Lesson Plan: Changes in State Science • 2nd Grade
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to identify and describe the changes in the state of matter that take place as a result of heating or cooling, using water as an example.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- describe temperature as a measure of how hot or cold something is,
- describe how heating or cooling matter can cause it to change state, such as melting or freezing a popsicle,
- identify and describe melting, freezing, evaporating, and condensing using water as an example,
- identify changes of state as reversible changes,
- identify some changes that are irreversible, like frying an egg.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- the three states of matter: solid, liquid, and gas,
- water vapor, ice, and water.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- chemical reactions,
- the process of changing between a gas and a solid,
- units of temperature,
- melting, freezing, and boiling points.
