Lesson Plan: Thermal Decomposition Science
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to describe and give examples of thermal decomposition reactions.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- describe and recognize thermal decomposition reactions,
- write word equations for thermal decomposition reactions,
- identify thermal decomposition reactions from symbol equations,
- give uses and examples of thermal decomposition reactions,
- explain why a thermal decomposition reaction is an example of a chemical change,
- highlight specific safety precautions related to thermal decomposition reactions.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- expressing chemical reactions using word equations,
- conservation of mass,
- chemical and physical changes.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- thermal decomposition reactions of nitrates, sulfates, hydroxides, or oxides outside of mercury oxide, copper(II) hydroxide, copper sulfate, and sodium nitrate.
