Lesson Plan: Simplifying Expressions: Commutative and Associative Properties Mathematics • 6th Grade

This lesson plan includes the objectives and prerequisites of the lesson teaching students how to simplify algebraic expressions using the commutative and associative properties of addition and multiplication.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • recall and identify the associative and commutative properties of addition and multiplication,
  • recall and identify the distributive property of multiplication,
  • rewrite expressions by applying the associative and commutative properties of addition and multiplication and the distributive property of multiplication,
  • apply the associative and commutative properties of addition and multiplication and the distributive property of multiplication to solve problems.

Prerequisites
