Lesson Plan: Thousands Mathematics

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to represent thousands using visual models, digits, and words.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • use visual models to represent thousands,
  • count in multiples of a thousand up to ten thousand,
  • understand that a thousand is a bundle of ten hundreds,
  • understand that a thousand is also 100 tens or 1,000 ones,
  • write multiples of 1,000 using numerals and words.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • modeling hundreds, tens, and ones using base ten blocks,
  • counting in multiples of one hundred up to a thousand,
  • writing 3-digit numbers using numerals and words.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • place value of 4-digit numbers that are not multiples of 1,000,
  • comparing 4-digit numbers.
