Lesson Plan: Acceleration over Distance and Time Physics

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to calculate acceleration using an object’s initial velocity, its displacement, and its acceleration time using the formula 𝑠 = 𝑢𝑡 + 1/2𝑎𝑡².

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • derive the formula 𝑠=𝑢𝑡+12𝑎𝑡 from a velocity–time graph,
  • derive the formula 𝑠=𝑢𝑡+12𝑎𝑡 algebraically,
  • use the formula 𝑠=𝑢𝑡+12𝑎𝑡 in all combinations.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • 𝑎=Δ𝑣Δ𝑡.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • nonuniform acceleration,
  • 𝑣=𝑢+2𝑎𝑠.
